Younger elementary students (K - 2nd) should take Natural World. Older elementary students (3rd - 6th) should take Latin Primer Series. Secondary-level students should use our Latin Grammar Series. If a family wants to have several children of different ages to learn together, the Latin Primer Series is a good choice.
Yes. Our Latin Primer Series introduces elementary-age students to the most foundational grammar concepts in Latin, and our Latin Grammar Series teaches secondary-age students the vast majority of the Latin grammar system and how to read grammatically.
Yes. Our Latin Primer and Latin Grammar Series include physical workbooks, quiz packs, and other support materials. Our readers are all physical books although some do have associated digital support materials.
Yes. Most Latin courses focus on grammar; Picta Dicta's vocabulary courses and readers work well as a supplement to other courses. Each Latin reader has a list of required grammatical concepts the student will be expected to know. The first three readers have app based vocabulary, with vocabulary under construction for the other elementary readers.
Even though Picta Dicta uses technology as a delivery system, its exercises are built on well-proven historical methods of Latin education. Picta Dicta courses are well suited for students learning on the "Trivium" model advocated by Sayers and others. However, students learning on another model will not find them any less useful!
Yes. Our platform keeps track of each learners' progress and customizes lessons and reviews accordingly. Roman Roads Press provides homeschool packages for multiple family members.
Yes, Roman Roads Press offers special packages for small co-ops (10 or fewer students) with a single organizer. For larger co-ops that are acting more like schools, they should contact info@pictadicta.com for school pricing.
Yes. These are entirely self-paced courses. Your child will have no contact with a live instructor or other students in the course.
The Picta Dicta learning platform is a web application and requires a web browser. Parents are, of course, absolutely right to be concerned about giving a child access to the internet. So, we STRONGLY recommend using web restriction to only allow certain websites. By allowing http://app.pictadicta.com in their settings, parents can ensure that their child cannot access anything other than what they have allowed.
Users of iOS and Android tablets may also download Picta Dicta to their homescreen. This allows a child to access the app without having to go through a browser directly. However, an internet connection is still required.
Yes, the Picta Dicta app must have a connection to its server to work properly. However, the data being downloaded is not very large, so an unlimited data plan is not essential.
Latin Primer lessons vary in length depending on the child, but generally take 10-30 minutes daily.
Picta Dicta courses have a gradual progression, intuitive exercises with illustrations, simple video explanations, and options to search forgotten words, so students do not need a lot of external help. However, parental involvement makes our courses even better. For students in the Latin Primer Series, our Homeschool Guides help parents keep their children on track. For students in the Latin Grammar Series, the Latin Grammar Companions provide answer keys and additional explanatory notes.
For students who need more support than their parents can provide, we strongly recommend the Ancient Language Institute for excellent online courses and tutorials for students of all ages.
